Harriet Tubman Live in Concert

Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert by Bob the Drag Queen

December 28, 2025 by Emmalita 4 Comments

What if some people from the past returned to the present? What if one of them was Harriet Tubman? Bob the Drag Queen imagines a world in which Harriet Tubman, her brother Moses, and some of their Underground Railroad crew return to the present (as does Fredrick Douglass) and they want to tell their story in the form of a show. They hire a songwriter who once won Grammys. His career was torpedoed when he was outted on live tv. Harriet and her crew demolish […]

Only on Game Day by Kristen Callihan

I find the trend of not using condoms the first time the characters have sex terrifying

Only on Game Day by Kristen Callihan

December 26, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I’m glad to see Kristen Callihan publishing again, even if I can’t recommend this particular book. Only on Game Day is very much in keeping with her new adult Game On series. I suspect this is the start of a series centering the Luck family. Three Luck brothers, January, August, and March are at various stages in their football careers – January sidelined after a career ending injury, August the first round draft pick quarterback, and March a college star. There are Luck sisters too – […]

I will be celebrating Jenkins July this year!

December 20, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Thank you KatSings!!! I’ve read a couple of Beverly Jenkins’s books as advance reader copies, but when considering diving into her backlist felt paralyzed by the number of choices. I had already planned to overcome that by participating in Jenkins July in 2026, and now KatSings has removed my mental barriers. I’m so excited!

Fan Service by Rosie Danen

Get in touch with your inner wolf

Fan Service by Rosie Danen

December 20, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I really loved Fan Service. It touched on so many things, but what I loved most was the way Rosie Danen dug into conforming to expectations versus authenticity. Devin Ashwood is a washed up actor who badly wants to be back in the role for which he is best known – Colby Whitaker werewolf FBI agent. Alex Lawson was once the Moderator on the biggest fan site for the tv show, The Arcane Files. Both are treading water. When Devon is caught on video actually […]

In a Second by Kate Canterbary

The downside of advance reader copies

In a Second by Kate Canterbary

December 18, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This is certainly not the worst book I read this year and it isn’t my least favorite book by Kate Canterbary, but it is down there. I feel badly about that because the author has made several comments about Audrey and Jude’s story being one she has had in mind for a long time. I feel a little extra guilty about not loving the book she’s wanted to write for so long. It’s one of the downsides of arcs. Audrey is one of the teachers […]

This Time, Next Year by Ruby Barrett

New Year’s Yearning and Spice

This Time, Next Year by Ruby Barrett

December 17, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I’ve seen some discussions in the romance community that claim high heat/open door romances lack yearning. This is Puritan nonsense. I could point to hundreds of examples of books that have both. Ruby Barrett’s New Year’s Eve focused novella, This Time, Next Year is one. Nora and Finn belong to a friend group that celebrate NYE together every year. On one New Year’s Eve, Nora and Finn share a kiss. Every New Year’s Eve after, Nora is in a quandary, will she kiss Finn? Will […]
