The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older

January 1, 2024 by Emmalita 6 Comments

This seems like a book that would bring delight to many Cannonballers. Malka Older’s The Mimicking of Known Successes was a perfect listen to transition from 2023 to 2024. Just over 4 hours long, I listened to Lindsey Dorcus’ narration instead of the booms of neighborhood fireworks, and then finished up this morning with my first coffee of the year. I knew going in that Known Successes was a sapphic scifi Holmsian mystery set on a human colony on Jupiter. What I love is that […]

Run Posy Run by Cate C Wells

December 26, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I have come to accept that there is no trope I won’t read if written by the right author. I don’t love dark romance and I don’t love mafia romance, but I can’t say I won’t read dark mafia romances, because I have read Run Posy Run multiple times. I’ll read mafia romances by Cate C. Wells and Katrina Jackson, and a few other writers. I first read this last year, but couldn’t figure out how to talk about it without sounding like I’m giving […]

It’s beautiful because it’s melancholy. It’s a complicated kind of beauty.

Canadian Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday

December 12, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I am struggling with getting my review of Jenny Holiday’s Canadian Boyfriend right. I really enjoyed it. It’s a romance surfing on big waves of grief and trauma. For a big chunk of the book Mike and Aurora have a quasi employer/employee relationship that some people will, reasonably, consider a hard no. I want to put all this up front, because it’s important information for readers, and I don’t want my whole review to be about the things that might put a reader off of […]

Naina Kumar Makes a Familiar Story Her Own

Say You'll Be Mine by Naina Kumar

December 10, 2023 by Emmalita 10 Comments

Say You’ll Be Mine is Naina Kumar’s debut novel. She takes a familiar story, the fake engagement for reasons, and through her characters makes it her own. As a romance reader, I am happy to read the same basic plot over and over again. I do want to read books with fleshed out characters and a strong author voice. Naina Kumar does that beautifully. Meghna gets a shock when she’s invited to her college boyfriend Seth’s wedding. She hadn’t know he was serious about anyone […]
