I have been on such a streak of good books that it is getting harder to stop and write reviews. I am now 4 reviews behind, and the second installment in the Murderbot Diaries is jumping ahead of Hunger, Kindred, The Hate U Give and Ancillary Sword. I have all those reviews started. I just need to stop reading long enough to write them. I adored the first Murderbot Diaries, All Systems Red. I felt like I had never identified more with a fictional character. […]
Chose my aim. Take one step and then the next. There had never been anything else.
I will often hear about an award winning science fiction book and think “I should read that, but I won’t because it sounds serious and boring.” That is what I thought when I heard about Ancillary Justice. Yes, I want to slap me too. Two things happened that moved the Imperial Radch series off my “ought to, but won’t” list. One, Leckie loves Murderbot and two, all three audio books were available on Scribd during my free trial period. I was correct that Ancillary Justice does […]
There Are No Magical Cures, But a Good Book Can Soothe the Soul
This was a lovely, comfy read after a weekend of intense emotions and anxiety attacks. Making Up is the third in Lucy Parker’s London Celebrities series. You don’t have to read Act Like It, but you should read Pretty Face first. You should read them both because they are delightful, but Pretty Face provides a lot of context. Lucy Parker has become an author I will definitely buy. She creates great characters and some very steamy romance. She has a way with turning phrases that are funny and […]
The Reward For a Job Well Done Is More Work
Despite my good intentions, The Prophecy Con jumped the line ahead of Kindred. For a while there, it was the only book I was reading that wasn’t ripping at my soul. At the end of The Palace Job, it seems like the everything is tied neatly in a bow. The bad guy is ousted, his plan is thwarted, the city and the Republic are safe, the Unicorn is going to get her virgin, and all of the Rogues have had their records expunged and been forgiven […]
Fortune Favors the Brave, Though Statistics Favor the Cautious
The Palace Job has been recommended by a friend a couple of times, and I happened to catch lowercasecee’s review just before I started reading it. It is like a magical Ocean’s Eleven, but lighter on the testosterone and heavier on the diversity. It’s a great heist novel with daring escapes, a bringing together of the crew, setbacks and secret identities. My non-Cannonballing friend sold it to me as the start of an adventurous series with great characters and engaging writing. One book in and […]
Great. I was permanently stuck as a Fae Princess from Emotionland.
I saw this reviewed by J back in February and thought it sounded awesome. It is awesome. It starts off fast and keeps going. I cannot stress enough what a flat out fun read this was. Eugenia “Genie” Lo is a high school student in the Bay Area. Her town is the poorer, less nice pocket of affluent Silicon Valley. She wants out, and the way out is acceptance to an Ivy League school and a career far away from San Francisco. Her single minded […]
