I love to read and would love to be able to talk about the books I read with a lovely community. I read almost anything and really struggle to talk about the books I love the most for some reason.

Who is in charge of picking books that become movies?

The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness

Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness

January 17, 2022 by Claudia 1 Comment

Seriously, who is in charge? I could say from a mile away this series would NOT make a good movie. But it did make a really good book series. I found myself emotionally involved and invested in the first book and in love with the second. The third was a bit of a let down personally but the conclusion and characters were still strong. Quick plot summary: Todd is a boy aging into manhood on a planet with a lack of women. The men of […]

Ten Thousand Escapes

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

January 16, 2022 by Claudia 5 Comments

I am going to start this review by thanking John Green for giving me a quote I can use to describe my feelings for this book: “I fell in love like you fall asleep: slowly then all at once.” I haven’t even read that book but it’s a pretty good quote and fits here so well. If I was more critical or reviewed and rated based on quality over the feelings that a book makes me feel I might lower this rating. It is far […]

Embers Burn Out

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir

A Sky Beyond the Storm by Sabaa Tahir

January 14, 2022 by Claudia 2 Comments

This book series had so much potential. The Ember quartet is a fairly typical YA fantasy at its core. Interesting world building and a focus on a few ‘chosen’ characters that have to save that world with a touch of romance and a huge splattering of violence. The book series started out a little slow to me in the first one but by half way through I was invested. By the second book I was in love! And by the third book I was…bored. The […]

What a fall from greatness…

Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko

January 6, 2022 by Claudia Leave a Comment

My disappointment in this sequel is palpable. The first book Raybearer (which I reviewed on my goodreads here if you are interested!)  was an absolutely wonderful, bright, and fun ride of a novel so imagine how absolutely disappointing it was to see its sequel seemingly fail to grasp what made the first one great. In this sequel, we follow Tarasai as she navigates her new position in the empire with new challenges and a totally new cast of characters. The plot is not uninteresting but […]

How do you like to rate/review short stories?

Tenth of December by George Saunders

January 2, 2022 by Claudia 1 Comment

I have no idea how to review or even rate short story collections but I will start with breaking down individual stories and then go over broader themes I suppose and hopefully have collected a general feeling by the end. This will probably have spoilers since its hard to talk about short stories sometimes without context and in such short bursts the context is…most of it. 1. Plot: The first story follows a multi shifting perspective of a girl who gets kidnapped, a kidnapper, and […]

Historical (Fan) Fiction: *An Occasionally True Story

Bright We Burn by Kiersten White

January 1, 2022 by Claudia 4 Comments

This book and this series goes well beyond my expectations that I held for it. I am not sure what I thought would happen and how I would feel but every other chapter was so compelling that I was lost to whatever they were feeling. The character work here especially just….*chef’s kiss*. I’ll get into it more below. Since this is the third novel in a series and I have not reviewed the other two this is just a quick and non-spoilery summary of these […]
