The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes

September 22, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well, I got nothing honestly. This was not a very good book. The premise was cool (serial killer that can time travel) and all of that, but the execution of said premise didn’t work out and I found myself not liking Kirby (the final girl as horror fans like to say). The other women/girls who were murdered were not given a lot to do but die. Also, there was way too many things that were left open-ended, i.e. why is this man able to do […]

Story of a Murder: The Wives, the Mistress, and Dr. Crippen

Story of a Murder: The Wives, the Mistress, and Dr. Crippen by Hallie Rubenhold

September 15, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. I really loved Rubenhold’s other historical novel following the women who were victims of Jack the Ripper. This one felt very separate and I didn’t feel like I got any particular insight into his second wife Cora at all. I wish that we hadn’t spent so much time devoted to Crippen’s mistress. It seemed very obvious to me she knew what Crippen did. I wish we had followed up with her family a bit more. I do have to say that this is the […]

Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night

Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night by Stephanie Rose

September 15, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. I am in annual training right now and barely slept so I am going to post an overall review on the collection as a whole and will come back later to rate each story individually at a later time. I have to say that Rose did a great job with evoking Halloween and many of the adult readers memories of horror books and short stories that shaped many […]

The Perfect Son by Fredia McFadden

The Perfect Son by Fredia McFadden

September 8, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

Very typical Freida McFadden. The only thing I can say is that McFadden didn’t have her usual, here’s two twists thing that she usually does. Some parts of the book dragged painfully by the way, but for the most part the book keeps moving as we figure out who abducted a young girl and whether the main character Erika’s son Liam was behind this like many in the town think. It’s not her best work, but not her worst. “The Perfect Son” follows Erika Cass […]

The Dollhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright

The Dollhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright

September 8, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

I read this book when I was a kid. It scared the crap out of me and I recall not sleeping for about a week because the thought of ghosts in an old dollhouse creeped me out. Also, in my mind, it was similar to the dollhouse we get in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and I had already had several nightmares about, one two, Freddy coming for you that terrified me right before sleep. FYI, my mom almost divorced my dad over letting us […]

Death in the Family by Tessa Wegert

Death in the Family by Tessa Wegert

September 5, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Woof. That was bad. I was hoping to find a new series to read/love but that is definitely not happening with this one. Honestly, there is zero character development with the lead (Shana), we get random things happening with suspects, we hear about a previous incident that happened before she moved with her fiancée, and then the book just keeps going on and on. Not one thing made any sense at the end and I just didn’t even get what Wegert was going for in […]
