This is a Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) book written by Neil Patrick Harris (NPH). I repeat, CYOA, NPH, so out of the gate, it’s strong. I got this book for Christmas (thanks mom!) and was pretty excited about it, as I’m a big fan of the legen(dary) man. Like a lot of budding nerds, I was a voracious reader of the CYOA format in my youth, and thought that the conceit was clever. After reading it, I’m glad I did and enjoyed it, but […]
The Awakening. But in Hollywood.
“…the book is very…sordid, isn’t it? And tough – by which they mean not a tough read, but hard-hearted.” Not being a fan of book intros (spoilers, love) I generally wait until the end of a novel to see what has been illuminated. In my version, the introduction by David Thomason eloquently summarized the complicated appeal of this book. It is compelling, complex, and has unyielding momentum. The question is, what is it, and thus the protagonist Maria, moving toward? The answer? Nothing. Estranged from […]
Knock knock knocking on heaven’s Door
Richard Mayhew is an ordinary London guy with an ordinary London life, until a chance encounter with an injured girl plunges him into a world he doesn’t know exists, London Below. London Below is where “the other people” live, those that have been forgotten by society and fallen through the cracks. Lady Door is from an esteemed family in this universe with unique talent, the ability to open things, and when her family is torn apart (um, literally) she goes on a quest to discover why. […]
Stealing: Things Like That Are Bound to Happen
I was delighted to receive this book as one of my Cannonball Read 6 book exchange gifts. This book was recommended by members an old book club many moons ago, and it’s been on my mind ever sense (I confess, I was enamored by the title.) Despite the long wait, and thusly raised expectations, I was utterly fascinated. John Charles Gilkey is the titular book thief, a man who dreams of opulence but comes from humble beginnings. To attain the object of his desires, rare books, […]
May your days be merry and bright…with fire.
This marks what I believe is my fifth year in a row of reading this as my annual holiday tradition. This year for a new spin on it I actually read it aloud to my boyfriend, who had never read it before, or anything else of Moore’s (one of my favorite authors). Is there anything more fun than sharing something you love with other people? If so, I don’t know what it is. And I discovered that reading out loud to someone is pretty fun! […]
Miss Peregrine saga continues, ambling.
I read the first Miss Peregrine book when it first came out and I really liked it. Though I’ve owned the second book for quite a while, I only now got around to reading it. In summary it was good, but the magic is gone. Where the first book left off, the children were exiled from their home and trying to find a way to help Miss Peregrine, stuck in her bird form. Fleeing from their pursuers brought many trials as Jacob tries to help […]
