I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Sentence by Louise Erdrich

May 15, 2023 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I heard good things, great things even, about Louise Erdrich from a few book pals and ya know she also has won a Pulitzer (though not for this book) so I knew I wanted to check her out. I came upon a discounted copy of this book at my local bookstore and Bob’s your uncle I bought the book. Aside: I typed that previous sentence and immediately thought, “Where does the idiom “Bob’s your uncle” even come from?!” A Google search says it’s unclear in […]

“Sometimes reality comes crashing down on you. Other times reality simply waits, patiently, for you to run out of the energy it takes to deny it.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

April 22, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

The first Taylor Jenkins Reid book I consumed was Daisy Jones and the Six, as nudged by the Reese Witherspoon book club. I listened to the audio, and it was an amazing ride: with a star-studded cast (Judy Greer! Benjamin Bratt!). It felt like listening to an episode of Vh1 Behind the Music, and I greedily lapped up every second of it. My next TJR was Carrie Soto is Back, her latest book, published in 2022. This time around, Carrie Soto is the retired GOAT […]

“She’d been seeing things through men’s eyes for years. Her entire career, men had informed her what was good and what wasn’t. And she’d always assumed they were right.”

The Change by Kirsten Miller

April 18, 2023 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I had been in a bit of a reading slump lately, i.e., it had been a minute since I had a slam dunk, a can’t-put-down book that was going to make me shout about it to innocent bystanders. I asked my reading peeps for something that would fill this void and my friend delivered on all cylinders. I’M EXCITED TO SHOUT ABOUT THIS BOOK AT YOU. I loved it 5000. This book is tasty and scrumptious. A true chef’s kiss of literary perfection: a well-written […]

Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts by Evan Ross Katz

April 16, 2023 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

Early in the pandemic, a friend and I were looking for a way to have a social outlet while trapped at home. As we are both extroverts married to introverts, we figured that it would help us, and our partners. In the same convo, I discovered that she had never seen one of my top favorite TV shows of all time…Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And thus, an idea took hold. We would watch Buffy together but apart, she in Louisiana and me in Illinois, with […]

“…a racehorse is a mirror, and a man sees his own reflection there. He wants to think he’s from the best breeding. He wants to think himself brave. Can he win against all comers? And if not, does he have self-mastery to take a loss, stay cool in defeat, and try again undaunted? Those are the qualities of a great racehorse and a great gentleman.”

Horse by Geraldine Brooks

I didn’t realize I could or would enjoy a book about horse racing, but here we are! I’m a bit bummed I missed my library book club meeting about this book because it would be fascinating for a discussion. In 2019, a master’s student of art finds a painting of a horse in his neighbor’s trash pile by the side of the road. He is intrigued and takes it to see what he can learn about it. Maybe it can be part of his thesis? […]

“There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing.”

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

March 28, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I’m glad my kiddo had the occasion to read this book for school which nudged me to revisit it! I owned a copy (which I think is now battered at the bottom of his backpack) but nothing beats telling your kid, “Oh? What book? Yeah, we have that one.” I can’t imagine a summary of this classic is needed, buuut just in case, Bradbury basically foretold the future in that his novel is in a future world where books are outlawed and firemen, instead of […]
