I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Mama Africa!

February 22, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I have enjoyed the few things I have read by Kathryn Erskine. And Mama Africa does not disappoint either. Who was Miriam Makeba? Probably few people can answer that. I know I could not before reading Mama Africa!: How Miriam Makeba Spread Hope with Her Song. She was a singer who was like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and sang protest songs. She was a woman like Nelson Mandela and helped lead her people to freedom. She was a fighter. She was an activist.  She […]

The Butterfly Dance

February 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Caterpillars Dotty and Stripe do everything together. They eat, sleep and play in all the ways caterpillars do! That is until the day Stripe is very tired and goes into a special sleep and he weaves his cocoon. After a while, Dotty does the same thing. After emerging, they notice that things have changed and not just because they are butterflies now. They look nothing alike (one has stripes and one dots), they notice that they do not eat the same foods and none of […]

A Tale of Two Bears and Wolf

February 19, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If Little House on the Prarie, Little Red Riding Hood and a folktale meet and created a book, Willa and the Bear by Philomena O’Neill would be the result. Have you ever read a book and thought, “Do I like this?” Bear and Wolf by Daniel Salmieri is that book.   These two books have nothing in common other than there are bears in them. And both have animals that take on human feelings, thoughts and actions. A bear would not return your lost doll, […]

Little Sid

February 19, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I think I would have liked this better with a less contemporary take on the subject or if it was a more realistic presentation. The story is too “how a kid and their family is today” with the language and actions of the characters. Obviously meant to grab a young reader, for the adult it could be a distraction to the story of Siddhartha. While I do not know for sure he did not have stuffed animals, somehow, I do not think he would have […]

Finding Wild

February 15, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

First a note on the image, as I have mentioned before, I work in a bookstore. And one of the things I love about that is the fact we have sale books. Nothing is wrong with them, they are just reduced price. That is why the sticker is on this image. The full price is $16.99. Publishers Weekly said this book “…celebrate nature though a whimsical mediation of the idea of wildness”.  And it does make you think about the wild. It shows you how […]

Dino-Hockey

February 15, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Meat-Eaters take on the Veggiesaurs in a hockey match for the Jurassic Ages! History will be made! Fans of dinosaurs and hockey will love this book for young readers.  Funny text that has a poetic, bouncy flow to it makes it a read aloud that adults and kids will love. With extremely full, vibrant, pop off the page colors and cartoonish characters, there is a lot to see. Do note that it could be hard to pronounce some of the names of the dinosaurs […]
