The cover of Three Little Witches and the Spooky Old House by Peggy Archer and Gaia Bordicchia (illustrator) makes it look like a sweet story. But, no! It is a spooky, creepy, scary tale! It has three little witches who are sneaking around, in the middle of the night! With brooms and sacks and cauldrons! And look at those impish grins appearing on their faces! Or at least it starts that way. As you move along, the three witches cook, clean and do witchy things, but as you keep reading you notice the tone of the book has changed from darker to lighter. This is shown in the colors, the tone of the text and images you see. Sure, there are ghosts and spooks, goblins and ogres, but you know, they are not as bad as they seem.
For the adult it is a cute, fun story that mixes spooky and lighthearted tricks and treats. And while any age could be read to, or the older readers could read solo, it might be best for ages five and up. The kids will just enjoy the light spooky rhythm of the words, the fantastically clever images and the great turn of events at the end. The friendship element to things is a cozy element and the surprise at the end will be delightful.
Read via an online reader copy, I see myself getting multiple finished copies when it comes out mid to later August 2026. A must have for any little witch, goblin, ghoul, or trickster as a Halloween, or any time, read.
