Drome by Jesse Lonergan is one of those reads where you have to read it to understand this book. And if you do read it, can you tell me what the heck (only I didn’t say heck) did I read?
Okay, I get that things have something to do about the Gods and Humans and their struggle with each other. Control and strength are main factors. And Man-Woman relationships play a large role in things. There is also the literal Light and Dark (I am assuming Light is a Female God and Dark is a Male God) factors. Yet, other than the obvious (Man is both good and evil), I can’t find a “deeper meaning” to it. Maybe it is not meant to have a “deep lesson” that makes everyone Live Happily Ever After. It is just one big sh^^t show and tough on you.
Not to say you won’t find a meaning, but in the middle of all the challenging, dark, tense, slow-paced action, it can be murky. Sometimes I am not sure who is who (or what is what) and how things were created. Though other times, no question, the Gods are Playing Judge, Jury, and Hangman. I guess there is a plot, but a lot of things are character driven. I didn’t like the characters (especially the horn guy). There is sexual content, the cast is uniquely diverse, even heroes and heroines are complicated and flawed. I picked up some elements of Christianity, Greek/Roman mythology, a tribal element, perhaps desert (African or Middle Eastern) peoples as well as an otherworld tone to things.
The main issues I had with things are fist, there is a lot of violence and maybe it is too gratuitous at that. The other is that the artwork can be complicated and awkward. Colors do help show some things, especially characters, but even then you do have to watch where you are reading or looking at. It is not for everyone, I wouldn’t give it to anyone under 14 (and 14 is pushing it) and it’s really not what I expected. It is, however, something you need to look at for yourself and don’t rely on my word.
