I know that Ann Patchett is not for everyone, but if you are a fan of theirs, or a fan of the illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser (or a fan of both) and want a book that is due in early February 2027 that is about a dog and books, then Button at the Bookstore is a book you might want to check out.
The concept is fairly simple: a dog is small, quiet and afraid of the world. An equally quiet, less small and less afraid of the world person comes and takes Button home with her. But like many dogs, they don’t do well alone at home, so he comes to work with her and that is when the adventures (both good and not so good) happen.
Our human works in a lovely little bookstore and Buttons is excited to explore. Of course, some people are afraid of this little dog, Button gets into trouble and things are not working out as one would hope, but that is until an equally quiet, equally small, timid young child finds Button and they quietly sit together, and read the best they can. And that is how Button gets his job at the bookstore.
The illustrations are sweet, cute, busy, crowded, and colorful all in a good way. It is a fairly straight forward, not a lot of “true” action story that is packed full of goodness. The tone is soft, and the text and images reflect that. Everything is just nice. If you like happily ever after stories, then you got it here!
