Forgive-Me-Not: A Graphic Novel by Mari Costa has enough humor to counter the seriousness of being a changeling, the human who is stolen away and the dangers of the Fae realm. The story is pretty familiar, with simple but detailed images to move the story along as much as the text/story itself, with a Damsel in Distress (DID), her hero (who is a heroine) and bad guys.
The Princess is not a Princess but a daughter of the Fae Realm. Her Human Counterpart has made a deal to bring the Princess back to the fairyworld to bargain for a better life. Or still as a slave, but hopefully better than the contract she has now. Of course, nothing works the way one plans. Princess turns out not to be so DID (but still no “woman hero”) and falling head over sword for each other was not in the play book.
There is some meat to things (chicken, not steak, but that’s good too). And the sides have their pluses and minuses. No, I was not blown away by the wonderfully sapphic romance, but I liked it. It wasn’t pushed (though things did happen quickly), or preachy. They just have their “dang I don’t hate her after all” enemies to lovers moment. It is normal and just naturally happens.
Now, the Princesses family is a bit, well, I felt the ending was rushed and flat with them, but oh well, there is a (spoiler-not-spoler) beautiful wedding at the end that really picks up where the main story images were a smidgen flat. Nothing popped off the page. They were not muted or lacking, but that ending really pops with some colors, some wild white and finally using light to show the Happily Ever After.
My Bingo Choice for cbr18bingo RIGHT (things turn out alright)
