One will never look at a pickle the same way again.
Or you won’t after reading The Wise Pickle by Sarah Howden and illustrated by Sabina Hahn. Due mid/later June 2026 I read this book via an online copy.
First, be prepared to witness weirdness. I mean a talking pickle for starters is really just the start of the weirdness. And second, be prepared to be amazed (by the fact there is a talking pickle who is a wise old soul. Or not). And finally be prepared for the ending of a lifetime (even if it is the pickles. Or not.)
The pickle gives sage advice to the others when it seemingly falls from the sky. It stays on the ground, becoming an old wise sage as the heat takes its toll. There is a dog, a surprise, and a few other things that are seen in terribly minimalist detailed and colored illustrations. But I liked it. That white space with green spots didn’t make me break out into hives (old news reporter here, white space = bad!) nor did I say I wanted more.
You see, I like this book. Is it my favorite? No, but that’s cool, it’s different, there’s something about it that doesn’t sour me to it or to reading or books overall. I have read a few stinkers and well, this pickle might smell like garlic, but its story doesn’t. Now, it is not for everyone, and perhaps it is best for adults and not kids, but I can see all ages finding something about it to enjoy. Just don’t be surprised if you kids start looking for a wise pickle or talking to it.
