I found a book that happens to be by the author and illustrator Jarrett Lerner that I was not the audience for and therefore, I am not a fan of. Please don’t get me wrong, I appreciate and admire the time and effort that goes into creating any book, in fact, I’m envious as I couldn’t begin to know where to start to do what authors do. It’s just not a book for me. That does not mean I’ll stop reading Lerner, far from it. I enjoy reading the styles they have. With that said, this book series is called Super Roomies: Lake of Slime: A Star Chapter Book. It came out in May 2026 and I read it via an online reader copy. It is good for the at least five and up crowd (probably up to 8 or 9, and a young 10 year-old could read if they are not up to reading level).
It is terribly easy to read, or at least for the adult, but for the kid it will be average. We focus on one story. We follow super heroes who are roommates and have issues like any roommate would. It is more a “brother-sister-sibling relationship” atmosphere. Basic humor happened, a few “oh no! That’s not good” moments and an ending that is amusing as (spoiler) the heroes don’t exactly save the day. I think the biggest issue I have with things is the illustrations. They are way too simplistic for my personal tastes.
Now I will say, despite not liking the above, I like the books in the The Scare School Diaries series I have read, and really enjoyed Work in Progress also by Lerner. And if you liked Super Roomies, they have another title coming in mid-late August called Paint the Town Pink.
