Working in a bookstore has some major perks. One is free books (for various reasons). And recently I found Spidey and His Amazing Friends: Teamwork Saves the Day!: My First Comic Reader! (Spidey and His Amazing Friends, My First Comic Reader!, Level 3) by Steve Behling, Giovanni Rigano, Antonello Dalena, Cristina Giorgilli, Cristina Stella, Dario Calabria, Lucio de Guiseppe and Marvel Press Book Group. I thought it would be a fun, quick read for me and something I could share with my oldest nephew. It is geared toward the six and up crowd, but my nephew is special needs and he loves images that are bright, bold and of course, loves Spiderman (or in this case more Spider-Kid sized characters) so really many ages and levels will be workable.
There are several stories that follow Spiderman and friends, such as Spider Ghost and Miles Morales. We have villains and other good guys (one turns into dinosaurs) readers might know . and there are Avengers characters such as adult Iron Man and the Hulk. It is cute, good to get kids reading, but not a lot of UMPH to the stories. Yet , overall I enjoyed it. Each individual story has a moral of working together as a team by using each other’s talents to the best of their abilities. Sometimes, villains are not so bad (one just wants to enter the science expo even if it is only Stark Industries inventions) and of course, some are bad. But it all works out.
I like the illustrations and it is fun. Things are bright, bold, not simplistic but on the easier side. There are details that are part of the story, support the story and are also background. Nothing really WOWed me, but I took a few minutes to just chill, unwind, and next time I see my nephew we can tell each other the story we see on the page, I can read the text and we can see what else is hiding on the pages (you can always play I Spy with a good illustrated book).
