While I enjoyed the build up, the ending was too quick in the graphic novel, Amelia Shadows and the New Head Ghost by Matthew Dow Smith. We have the slow climb of Amelia and her tutor trying to beat the “New Head Ghost” her father has hired to manage their home, then BOOM Ameila figures out “the secret” to her father’s choice, why there is a new ghost in the house (and why he is so bossy), and then has more questions.
It is interesting, but I’m not sure I like it. I do want a sequel (this is the first book) so I can figure out what is going on, as I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a continuation series where if you miss one book you will have missed big plot points, adventures, and such. This way, we will slowly learn about Amelia, her father and their darker magic. While they are “dark wizards” they are (or at least Amelia) fairly relatable, not overly smooth with understanding the way of the world and almost likable. I think you can say Amelia is part Pippi Longstocking, Eloise, Ramona Quimby, with her tutor a bit like Amelia Bedila and Rupert Giles of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (only not as literal or as buff and slayer-mentoring-esque).
Due in April 2026, book two is coming in August 2026 and volume three is planned for December 2026. I am hoping to find a reader’s copy of the other two books as well. Best for ages 10 to 14, younger readers could participate in the reading of or the reading to them categories. The only comment is that while Ameila is like a Harry Potter character, she is trying to be more Draco than Harry, and becomes a bit of Hermione, Luna and Harry, this might not be for the too young or overly sensitive reader. At the same time, nothing horrible happens. It is fantasy humor.
An older series by Smith is the October Girl series that is for at least 13 and up reader. Equally interesting, but I prefer the OG.
