As I read the words of Olivia Sullivan on the pages of the graphic novel, Oracles, I heard the Beatnik standing on the coffee house stage making their words bubble out. I saw the slam poet gazing out into a darkened crowd. There was a spotlight in my brain that shone brightly on the poet freeversing.
And while I like all of that , this book was not for me. However, if you enjoy a slightly nonconcrete writing style or free verse prose, with literary artistic endeavors, you will enjoy this.
Do we still need to write 250 words in a review? If so, I am just going to ramble. I was excited when an email came into my mailbox. I have found some of the best books when a publisher sends out a mass email to booksellers. Or maybe I requested it and forgot I did (I request a lot of things I forget I have). Maybe it was something I entered to “win reader copies.” Who knows why it came into my inbox, but it did. And I was not in the mood for it. I was not the reader for it.
However, there are reviews from people who loved this book. There are notes saying it talks about death, grief and the healing process. Descriptions talk about the unknown. And if I have to describe things in two words: “abstract execution” from Broken Frontier is the best way to describe it. Oracles is the debut graphic novel of Sullivan. It is due later in April 2026. I plan on finding a finished copy so I can sit somewhere quietly and not be at my work computer trying to read it as an online reader between bites of my lunch food of the day.
