While food insecurity is not a new subject, it is not one that is always talked about, especially in a picture book form or is not always accessible to all readers or listeners. The story La bondad brilla en la oscuridad / Kindness Glows in the Dark (Spanish and English Edition) by Gama Valle and Mrinali Álvarez Astacio (Illustrator) introduces this concept to a younger audience, but the extras at the end allow it to grow with the reader. The format, the place the story is set and using both English and Spanish is a fresh way to bring to light the subject.
The artwork can be judged by the cover as the style continues throughout the book. They are bright and a bit “off center” to the eye. I felt this helped make the story less intense and give a bit of humanity and hope to things. The idea of privilege and friendship and the child who needs help is handled well and the illustrations help with that. One of the things I enjoyed about Barefoot Press titles is that they are relatable, educational and give hope all at the same time. Therefore a book about the included themes is not dark and hopeless, but also does not shy away from things.
Like most books from this publisher the eight-nine and under crowd is the audience for the book. Since I read it via an online reader, I am not sure how large the final copy will be, but I’m leaning towards their medium to slightly larger sized book. Due in June 2026 you will be able to find a paperback copy of the English/Spanish edition and should be able to get both hardcover and paper in English only.
