Scurry by Mac Smith is an adorable and serious graphic novel. There are elements of fantasy, science fiction, action and coming of age that are familiar and is also done in a fresh manner. The elements of Secret of Nimh, Lord of the Rings, Warriors, Redwall, and spiritual themes come out, so you will see things you know already and can reference them. The characters are animals therefore, things might not be for sensitive readers (even adults) as there is war and violent situations.
We follow a colony of house mice who are trying to deal with the absence of food easily gotten. Not only do they have this, but the world is not safe for a small mouse. There are hawks, cats, and dogs. Now there is a new threat as well with the wolves on the outskirts of the town. Plus inside the colony there is unrest and mutiny abound. We follow one “little red mouse” who is a King Arthur/Christ like figure. He must help the mice find a new home, stop some deathly enemies, and survive the dangers of the wilderness (flooding, more hawks, and possible curses). The artwork is both smooth and a bit “off”.” Or at least in the version I had. I think I might have gotten a library bound copy (hardcover) so this could account for that. The version I had also had much in the way of extras (cast of characters, discussion questions, extra stories and more).
In the end, things are done tastefully and could be for most ages, but aged 10 and up probably would be best. There is talk of war and how the humans have disappeared, so things can be a bit intense, plus death and almost death of some of the animals. But I think it is no worse than some things readers see on TV or in movies.
