The concept of the book, Meet March: A Seasons Picture Book for the Start of Spring, is neat: having February and April help March “find spring.” The idea is that winter (February) is leaving, March is doing its March things while looking for spring, and then March hands things off (symbolized by a rabbit) to April to run with it. The art is minimalist, colors are primary and not overpowering. More of a 2.5 as it is solid and enjoyable yet not a WOW. Great for a classroom setting (as I’m assuming the whole series will be). Several extras help with making activities for the classroom or your children on a rainy March day.

April Martin has several titles in The Calendar Kids series. It looks as if some are being reissued as I was able to locate all twelve months, but only some seemed available for purchase. I read via an online reader, even though March is currently available, therefore I did not see the bonus poster. But the extras were fun looking. Great conversational pieces and activities to make and spend time with your children doing. The characters are diverse (February is a girl of color, January presents Asian) but since I only read March I am not sure how deeply they go.

Ages probably range from at least five to young eight to ten (and ten being a young ten). Of course, adults could enjoy it as well. I was also able to locate April, May, and June, and while I am curious, I am not sure I will finish the series. With that said, if you do decide to pick them up, I recommend getting all you can at once. I think, especially in the classroom setting, you will need them all.
