Recently I had the opportunity to read a book by Ioana Stoian. When I started to look for other books by them, I located the title Begin One Way: A Children’s Book of Road Signs (illustrated by Sophia Vincent Guy). At first, I was thinking how could anyone do a fun or interesting book about road signs? It had been done before; and honestly, it was a bit dull. However, while I am not jumping up and down saying this is the best book ever, I am saying: this is how you don’t make something about sings dull, but fun instead.
We have everyday signs that you will probably see in a larger town or small city. Of course, even some rural areas would have them as well. And it also allows you to have a conversation starter about the signs in your area/neighborhood(s). Sure we all probably know Stop, but do we know yield? Or do we know signs for libraries? To help make things less factual only, there is a story, narrated by a child who is exploring their neighborhood on a walk with their adult.
Now, I was not wowed by the illustrations, but they had a certain charm that was enjoyable. They are “rounded” and light colors with minimalist details, but do not lack in what they show or pop. They are cozy, comfortable and inviting. They can be a bit on the sweeter side, but this just keeps the attention of the child who is not interested in “car crashes” and “action” events.
