Asha and the Toymaker by Sakshi Mangal is something that one needs to experience themselves. I can say it is about Asha and her father in India. I can say that she is a young girl whose father wants her to study hard, not worry about money (that is his job to raise money so she can go to school) and have the opportunities that he did not have when he was a child. But that just covers the surface. That does not show you how these characters interact. You cannot see the images. And you just do not get the lightheartedness of it all.![]() This is actually the second time I had read the book. I do not like or dislike it any more than before, but did notice it had a more calming attitude than I remembered. There is the excitement of the toys that Asha’s father makes, especially after she adds her special touch, but it really is a very quiet book. It’s a nice book to anytime read. The idea is simple, a child of a single father loves to paint. Her father makes money selling wooden toys in the market. She knows that some days he goes hungry as he only has enough money to buy her dinner. And when she decides to help him with making his toys special things come together for them. The colors are bold, and tell the story of not only our two characters, but the place they live, their culture and more. The author is from the area as well, adding some of their own experiences, but it is a work of delightful fiction. Read via an online reader, the book is available. |
