While I have difficulties with puzzles like the ones in AB@C: And Other Gramograms (gramograms: word puzzles where letters, numbers, and everyday symbols create words and sentences) sometimes, I do enjoy them and find them clever. Therefore, when I saw that there was a new book coming out, I was interested.
Rob Meyerson’s works range for all ages, but some are more adult than others. Of course, they are not all necessarily “inappropriate,” but as always, know your reader. I was reading via an online reader copy (as it is not due until mid-November 2024) and I did not take my time, so, take your time, there is no rush! Fun illustrations that set the tone are done by Dan Misdea. They are simple, with little color and very minimal details.
Some of the word games are easy enough, others are helped out by the image accompanying them, and others will be a bit more difficult. Thankfully there is an answer key at the end of things. Starting with the cover, you will get all types of subjects as well as levels and sense of humor.
The introduction is a smart thing to read first, as it not only shows the inspiration and history of gramograms, but also gives a few tips. However, the inspiration (one William Steig and a couple of books by him) was perhaps one of the better parts of the overall work. I enjoyed reading it. Of course, this is better for the adult reader and less for the child.
As it was a reader copy from online, I am not sure of the final dimensions, but I am assuming it will be a fun “stocking stuffer” like gift and/or for someone who has everything and you need a little something that is different.
