Sara Cate continues to be one of my favorite romance authors. Her new novel, The Home-wrecker, is the second installment in a series about the Goode family, a family recovering from the toxic Christianity of its fallen-from-grace patriarch who happens to have been a megachurch pastor before being brought up on attempted murder charges. Wow, that sentence is a mouthful, especially since he’s a secondary character.
Caleb is a successful defense attorney who is married to Briar, his college sweetheart. Like many couples, they are struggling with the journey to have a second child. Somewhere along the way, it has become a chore and they have lost the ability to communicate with each other. Since The Home-wrecker is written in multi-POV, we are painfully aware that they both love each other, but have just lost that something that successful couples have. They both know this, but somehow can’t express it to each other. It’s almost painful to read.
Dean is an escort who crashes his way into their lives. He works for the sex club that is owned by Caleb’s sister-in-law, Sage. When his house burns to the ground, Sage arranges for him to be able to use the garage apartment that Caleb and Briar have been considering renting out. The tension is electric when Dean shows up to move in.
I don’t want to go into any more detail because I want you to read this one for yourself. What I will say is that in true Sara Cate fashion, the characters explore who they really are, how their relationships function on multiple fronts, what it means to be a good person, etc. You really grow to care about these characters. You want them to prosper, to thrive, to be happy.
In addition, the spice level is OFF THE CHARTS. The Home-wrecker earns the THUNDERSEX™ designation in the best possible way. If you are looking for vanilla missionary, this is not for you.
