Combining the usual suspect shapes (circle, square) with more unusual ones (diamond, hexagon) Scribble Scrabble: A Board Book of First Words and Shapes for Growing Minds (A Wishy Washy Sequel) is a fun combination. Tabitha Paige, M.S., CCC-SLP and Paige Tate & Co. (Producer) made an overall toned story that is sweet, silly, and educational. It is all compacted into a smaller picture book that is good for smaller hands. The images are delightful and have a humor that adults can appreciate.
I read via an online reader copy though the book is currently available. I have not read Wishy Washy, but hope to find a copy soon, even though the tone of things is overly sweet. Yet, that is what makes things work. That cute mouse, the fun pencils and their cast of shavings, openness to things makes things solid and lighthearted enough to not feel harsh. It allows for fun, entertainment and some educational elements to meld together. The realistic approach to the watercolored illustrations makes them and the story approachable for multiple ages, but also have a mature, classic, older fashioned atmosphere. The colors are swimmy on the page.
And if you are wondering about the qualifications of the author, the books are created by a licensed speech therapist and professional artist. This book and its prequel are perfect for when your own child is starting to explore words, but I would recommend it for a baby shower gift or for someone who enjoys books that have clever and fun artistic imagery.
