Mel the Chosen is an odd little girl and in an odd little book that is a fun way of showing an adventure that is both familiar, and new to us. Rachele Aragno’s story gives us a little magic and the age old warning of “Be careful what you wish for, as you just might get it.” Much of the book is “know your reader” with the “spooky” elements (not too much for most people, but could be for some), the slightly abstract but realistic illustrations, and how busy things can be. I would recommend for at least ages 10 and up for the main reader, but younger could do if a stronger reader or being read, too. It is a graphic novel that has an “old school” feeling with modern elements.
I was not “OMG best book everything” with Mel, there were a few bumps here and there, but overall it was quaint. Sure, there were a few parts that were a tad more modern than I wanted, but the idea of a girl having the age old wish of wanting to “grow up” is handled fresh, but reminds me of other things I have read. Kids will like how Mel escapes from the villains, solves the problems, and makes friends along the way.
As above mentioned, the illustrations are the thing that are a make or break due to their unique style. They are goofy, fun, clever, overly fantastical and simple without any simplicity. The colors are used to set the scene, as are details. Things are overly busy and it can be crowded. Things are not always what they seem but pay attention to them. I am not sure if I liked book one enough to go onto any sequels, but it is not out of the question.
