Okay, this might be a surprise, but I read a little bit. In fact this should be such a shock to you that if you did not fall down laughing, you are not paying attention. Seriously, I like books. I like sharing books and I will share three with you. Disclaimer: even if the book is out, I read all as online reader copies.
Pockets for Two: A Collection of Girlhood is a sweet story about the magic of pockets, treasures and special friendships. Lindsay Ward’s story has hints of classic story and modern tones. There is a lot going on, but not in a traditional “action packed” kind of way. Yet, as we follow two best friends through the school year, and see what fun things they can hide in their pockets, we get to explore with them. The adorable illustrations to support and move the story along. Brizida Magro illustrates this friendship of two girls and the fun, amazing things they do together. Read as an online reader copy, it is due January 2024.

If you want something to read right now, you can try Beneath by Cori Doerrfeld. This is another sweet story, but with a hint of sadness. It is about the things that are “underneath” the surface and that sometimes we can know what that is, but sometimes we cannot. However, there is usually someone we can share the good and the bad with; someone who will “get it” even if you do not think so at first. This is a story of loss (hints of who has left are in the digitally created art) but there is also hope. The artwork itself is different and yet familiar. The colors and details help keep an upbeat feeling while also allowing for a softer flow. Things are relatable, you can adapt it to fit your situation.
And then there is another book about adapting to your situation with Hedgehog and the Art Show. We do not see how Ozge Bahar Sunar’s hedgehog is injured, but they are hurt badly enough to need their hands wrapped, which is fine, except they cannot practice their Letter A in class like the other students, making it seem like they will not be able to participate in the art show, showing off their A work. Yet, a surprise awaits our hedgehog when they see their teacher adapting to a situation where they are unable to use their wings that gives them an idea how to be included in the art show. The clever art by Ceyhun Sen accents things in a classical and modern style with good details and fun colors.
