The new girl in school has a problem: only she can see the “light creature alien” in this graphic novel called, The Girl and the Glim (or the light creature who is an alien). And this is on top of the fact as if she wasn’t weird enough to start with! She is small for her age and the bullies find all the puns available for that. Not to mention her parents are “shrinks.” But sometimes a girl and her Glim have gotta do what a girl and her Glim gotta do to save the school!
This is a fun story by India Swift. The theme is good (fitting in, friendships, school) but nothing seriously to sink your teeth into. Yet, that is not a bad thing. And the simple, but colorful, art mixed with the minimal text allows for a cute and not-edgy tone for ages 8 to 10 (or younger 11 or 12). Michael Doig created images that allow you to be comfortable as you go on the journey. The ending allows for a sequel, but also it is the end of that arc for our heroes.
There are some interesting pieces that come into play that I was curious about why Swift introduced them, such as our main character has a brother in college that we have a small arc with (though it did provide a funny for the adult when the mom said that the brother/son was in college and go make some irresponsible choices and not call his mother), yet, overall it is a good story and worth a library visit.
