Though there is another edition of Delicates: Collector’s Edition by Brenna Thummler already out, I read it via an online reader copy and it is due mid-March 2024. Since I read volume one, Sheets, ages ago and forgot some main points, I think reading this series (Sheets, Delicates, and Lights) all together might be the best way to read. Yet, I am still waiting to find a copy of Lights to confirm this.
There are collectors editions of volumes one and two. But since volume three is new as of September 2023 no collector’s edition has happened yet. In volume two this collectors edition (as I have not seen one’s collection edition to again confirm this) has extras, but the story is the focus and those extras are wonderful bonus material. The story has continued from Sheets. Which was, we followed a young teen as she deals with the death of her mother, her fathers depression and the town changing. In Delicates we are later in the story and new people have been added. We have the familiar story of fitting in, the weirdos and the popular kids. We see how we don’t know what is happening inside of someone’s mind, or how they are feeling and the hurt they can give as they hurt and don’t know where to focus it. We also see how doing nothing can be just as bad as doing something to hurt someone.
In both stories we see the real ghosts and the ones that haunt us internally. Volume one introduced us to real live (um…dead?) ghosts. They have issues, the humans have issues and together the two try to work things out. The real ghosts are perhaps my favorite part of the art as we see them represented by the stereotype Sheet-Ghost and that is a symbol in itself, especially in book two. This artwork is expressive and moves things along in ways text cannot. We see the expressions, the body language and how things around us keep happening. The art is their own character, while supporting the story itself.
The trigger warnings are bullying, one characters depression, and possible suicide attempt. But all are done tastefully and realistic (even if the ending is a bit idealistic).
