I was browsing through my online reading links and found You Wish Volume One. Only I did not realize it was volume one. It looked like a one time graphic novel story. But nope, there will be more. How many I am not sure, but since it is a series probably more than I want to get into as I hate waiting for sequels! But since this Jeff Victor series is not starting until January 2024, I will have a loooooooong while to wait for volume two. (See? The waiting!!)
However, this terribly cute story about a family, with a fun twist, has an ending that makes me want to stop there. I do not want to know that the bad genie tries to get revenge, and that the surprise that happens is going to get “undone” or anything bad happens to Avery and her quirky family.
Guess I better explain. Avery is a young kid who lives in the middle of nowhere. Her father runs a gas station, she likes magic tricks (but is really bad at them, of course) and the only people she talks to is the rare person stopping for a bathroom or gas. But one day she finds an old miners lantern and in a typical kid fashion, she starts playing “old prospector.” But instead of gold, she accidentally rubs the lamp and finds a magic herald to tell her she has three small wishes coming to her. This leads to an adventure inside the lantern, where the two friends meet up with unsavory people, well genies, and an amber prison housing a very special prisoner.
The magic and realistic elements have been done before, but the surprise Avery learns about her family makes it fresh. One character might be really cliché, but still overall it’s a good, cute read for ages 8 to 12. The artwork is glossy, not overly detailed, but not empty and has an Adventure Time look to it. Things are modern and yet, have a classic undertone.
