Fifteen year old Morgan lives on a small Canadian island, where she spends her days hiding her true self from her three girlfriends. Home life isn’t much better, as her single mom and ornery brother also don’t seem to understand her.
When Morgan meets a mysterious, beautiful tween named Keltie, her life becomes more interesting and more complicated. Morgan likes Keltie a lot, and Keltie unabashedly is affectionate to Morgan. But Keltie doesn’t understand Morgan’s need for secrecy.
Add into the fact that Keltie is a selkie, and Morgan feels like she has a lot more to juggle. But could it be worth it for a love like Keltie’s?
This is a very sweet tween LGBTQ romance with a touch of fantasy. Ostertag’s adorable artwork will appeal to fans of their prior Witch Boy series, as well as fans of Telgemeier and the like. The book would likely be enjoyed by older teens too, especially those seeking more queer representation.
The conflicts between Morgan and her friends and family work out nicely – everyone’s story is deeper than it may seem at first glance. The class and climate issues add real-world concerns to Keltie’s fantastical existence. A lovely story in a lovely package.
