Relation”ship”
Reckless? Hmm. Not the adjective I’d use. Girls without a plan. Girls who bounce from one dire situation to another without a whole lot of forethought. Girls who rely on their good looks to temporarily find themselves in a cushy position, but never learn how to leverage it. Girls who live in a sketchy rich bro world and don’t mind it at all. Girls who eventually start dying left and right. At least the bros do as well, so there’s that.
This book is set up on the Agatha Christie plan. Instead of isolated English estate, think isolated South Sea Island. Strictly for temporary island hopping, since there is no fresh water on the island. Rumors are of occasional stays by shipwrecked sailors, or shot down pilots during the war, but the sinister vibe is clear from the start. Certainly cuts down on the number of suspects when the murders begin.
So the cast of characters starts with Lux, working housekeeping in a Maui resort. She is more or less family-less, her mom having just died of cancer, while Lux pulled out of college to care for her for the last three years. She’s come from San Diego with Nico, cute bartender who comes from a wealthy family, but is slumming it, he with his beat-up yacht (named for previous girlfriend. Hmmmm.) Lux helps him with the cash to fix it, and they plan on sailing off to a magical South Sea island. But apparently Nico decides they need to take a couple of passengers with them, a pair of girl pals traveling the world with a whooole lot of secrets regarding their respective pasts. Hmmmm again. Once at the island, they are joined by a fancy yacht rich guy from Australia, and his glamourous but extremely friendly girlfriend. And one more time, hmmmmmmm. OK, Lux, start putting these pieces together.
And not to spoiler alert, but by the end I was getting the distinct whiff of Unreliable Narrator. Just sayin’.
