I was looking for quick reads one recent weekend, and I was not particularly picky, just as long as they were short and frankly, something that was not going to tax my brain too much. I found an online reader copy of the seriously sugary sweet book, (which is due late September 2023), Pocket Peaches Volume 1 by Dora Wang.
The theme of being yourself is obvious and for the adult reader, predictable. It is good for kids who like fluffy bunnies and super cute animals and their stories. The biggest issue I had is the fact that they are animals and the main character has a pet dog! (Because you know animals owning animals is just odd to me.) And they are not really wearing clothes, but that was a secondary issue that really was not that important, just an observation because animals do not wear clothes. Though one character is wearing a cape.
From page one you know you have cute characters as their names are Peaches, Cream and Mango, and they will add to their friendship circle, Taro. I was hungry just thinking about their names. And they have snacks and several pages on the making of cupcakes and the icing to cake ratio. And all of this is illustrated in what I call bubble tea for the eyes. Everything is round and soft and cuddy. It is all just so pastel and bright and I will say it again, cute and sugary. Now that is not a bad thing, just something you need to be aware of. Kids will get a kick out of it, and if you follow Wang on their social media sites, you know what you are getting into.
