cbr15bingo Guide: We must be the guides for the next generations to keep the conservation of our world happening.
My Grandfather’s Song at first seemed like it was going in one direction, but it does a slight turn. The beginning seems more of how nature is wild and therefore for us to learn from, but the turn comes when the narrator shows us how everything is connected and respect is given to the wild. We see all this with how the narrator grows. You will learn that this story (almost in a folktale/folklore format) though set in Vietnam, you see how the native populations have similar values around the world. The author, Phùng Nguyên Quang, includes extras that are a delightful addition.
I enjoyed reading this due in mid-October 2023 story (read via an online reader copy) immensely. However, it was Huynh Liên Kim’s illustrations that really caught my attention. The colors are rich, deep, and the shadows and light playing with each other really set the mood and tone of the narrative. The details are lush and immense. The story unfolds slowly with text and art complimenting each other. The art is it’s own character and supporting member of the cast.
This story has several layers. We see the respect of the land, the people and the conservation. We see the connection between grandfather and grandson. And how the older generations teach the younger ones, and one day the grandfather will pass over to the other side and connect with nature one last time. And how then it is the grandsons turn to teach the new people and the next generations. It is a longer story, so not for the really young or the “too active” group, but it can be an all ages work.
