The story of Hidden Gem is one we know. There are a lot of beautiful gems out there, but there is only one you. And this is told through the eyes of a small people who sees that the Museum of Rocks advertising the most amazing one, he is curious and find outs. And there are a lot of lovely items. Geodes, gemstones, crystals. All of them shining. And then the sign for the World’s Most Beautiful Gem comes up. And our pebble is wondering can they stack up? And of course, they see themselves in the shining gem, and yes, they are the most beautiful.
The story that Linda Liu made might not be original, but the illustrations they did are. They are sweet, simple, not simplistic and the right colors used, and right details given. Overall, they might not be THE BEST IN THE WORLD, but they are the best for the book and for right then and there.
I enjoyed the story, but I really enjoyed the images of the geodes in particular. But I like the surreal and realness to them all. They might not be GRAND, but they are comfortable, nice, keep you reading along. I liked the crack in the pebble probably the most. That unique touch added to the overall tone. I think most ages can read/listen to and enjoy it. In July 2023 I will find the final copy (I want to see how the colors look not online) and I want to see the actual size of the picture book. As of right now, it works well for a read aloud or a one-on-one reading.
