I only give Water Look Away a one as the book was not for me. I wish that I could put in two ratings, one rating for me (a one) and a three for the potential for someone else. Maybe this book by Bob Hicok was too sophisticated for my personal reading tastes. Or maybe the subject just was not for me. Either way I was just unable to really get into the poetry.
The biggest issue I had was that the poems were disjointed for me. I was unable to grasp the theme of a story/poem. The words were as clear as these words are to you, but I was not “getting it.” There are several reasons why this could have happened. Poetry should not be read online (I found an online reader copy as the book is due in August 2023). Or at least not read online by me. I probably was not in the right headspace for poetry. I was thinking at one point, “What if this had pictures?” Just a simple sketch or two would “mix things up” and not be such a flat page. Maybe I needed to …. And the list goes on.
But then I read part of the publisher description of the book. It says: (this book) is an experimental conversation with the highest and lowest facets of humanity. Okay, it is an experimental conversion! Sorry but your conversation was a little slurred for me. Still, I do hope other people find your work to be pleasing to their tastes.
