I like fairy tales, and while I do enjoy them classically done, I like them with a fun twist, too. We start out Cinderella and a Mouse Called Fred with the usual Cinderella basics. One grumpy fairy godmother, one pumpkin, some sisters, a stepmother, a royal party. However, there are a few differences such as Fred tells the story (he’s a mouse, if you couldn’t tell by the title) that somewhat befriends Cindy (no sewing of clothing, but there is some pumpkin protecting, squeaks and human talk) and then we have the big night. Then when the prince comes looking for the slipper wearing gal, Cinderella takes it upon herself to… well, you need to read it to find out.
Due in mid-August 2023 you can find out the answer to this situation and the question, “Are glass slipper shoes comfortable?” Deborah Hopkinson and Paul O. Zelinsky are in their prime with telling you the real and true story of how Cinderella did some gardening, went to a ball, did some talking to a mouse, (and how a mouse really feels about becoming a horse) and how they all lived happily ever after.
The artwork of Zelinsky is funny, busy, and colorful. You know their work; you know this picture book. If this is your first time in the world of Hopkinson and Zelinsky, you are in for a treat. They are a clever read and viewing. The older child/reader/listener and their adult counterparts can all find something to enjoy. There is something for everyone and everyone for something. If you are looking for something different, but also somewhat familiar, you need Cinderella and Fred Mouse.
