Papa’s Magical Water-Jug Clock by Jesus Trejo and illustrated by Eliza Kinkz. When Little Jesus can finally spend time with his father on the job, he knows it will be fun. What he does not realize that is he is going to misunderstand his Papa’s words about how that water jug can tell time, because when it is empty, it is time to go home. But it is a hot day and Jesus is a generous kid and he helps himself, his father, and the animals he meets along the way, allowing the water jug to become empty way too early. And they have much more to do! This story about time and while helping is good, sometimes you need to be a bit careful how you help, is good for most children who like lively tales. The cover artwork you all you need to know about the artwork of Eliza Kinkz. It is colorful, cartoonish, and a bit goofy. Due June 2023. Read via online reader copy.
Benita and the Night Creatures by Mariana Llanos and illustrated by Cocoretto. This book is a hoot. When Benita finds a new book, nothing will stop her, not even the mythical monsters of Peru. One creature has found a new house to haunt, but Benita is having nothing to do with it. Just toss him a lollipop or a tissue. Time to call in reinforcements! But no matter who the monster calls, Benita is not budging. What are a bunch of colorful, cute, simply created (but interesting) monsters to do? Well, maybe if they can’t beat her, they would join her. But t hen again, what is this thing called reading? September 2023 you and four Peruvian beings of mythology will learn the charms of reading.
Vlad, the Fabulous Vampire by Flavia Z. Drago (on text and art). Another September 2023 book, and another be yourself book is this little gem. Vlad has a secret. They have terribly rosy cheeks! Just positively living looking! And he loves fashion. So, through a few twists and turns, a few bumps and a friend in need, Vlad learns that there is nobody like they are and that is something to celebrate. The fantastically funny and lovely illustrations are a mix of colors and lack there of tht make everything both slightly serious and seriously cute. Plus, you get to see all the amazing, wonderful, delightful fashion that Vlad creates, wears and others enjoy. This might be my favorite of the group as it has all the elements, goof and real, but also sweet and sassy. Not to mention a healthy dash of spooky and wonderfully fabulous black outfits!
