As the description says of this Brain Smitty Smith graphic novel, Officer Clawsome: Kelpcake Crisis! this is Dogman meets Spongebob. And if you like them, you will like this. There is a bit of “James Bond-like” elements with a few villains (there is a mechanical shark that has one heck of a bad diet…I mean eating garbage is one thing, but whole buildings?), but overall, everything is straight forward and not overly “sophisticated.” Then again, a talking lobster who is a former wrestler (and has a starfish sidekick that is attached to his chest) does not lend itself to much seriousness. That, and the overall easiness allows this to be good for reluctant readers and the illustrations can be fun (though the green kelpcake/donuts were a bit fishy for my tastes).
Chris Giarrusso is the artistic mastermind behind the creation of the illustrations. They like colors, minimal details, and knows how to make the face of a starfish have anxiety, humor, and glee. They know how to make an underwater metropolis come to life and compliment Smith’s text. Overall, the caper of trying to find out who not only stole the kelpcakes, but the whole kelpcake building, is an easy mystery. Names like Catfishburglar do not hide who probably the bad guy/fish is.
There are puns, and overall, just a silly time. This is a “safe grandma buying read for the grandkids” but the kids will enjoy it too. It was not my cup of tarter sauce, but as long as you are not allergic to shellfish you will enjoy devouring everything served up to you.
