Oh, that Witch of Mine! The things she knows, does, and teaches us and the characters of the first volume of the Haeyoon and Mas manga graphic novel. You learn she is a witch, do not know she is the sister of the scape goat of the village (until later, then in the “all witches are sisters” way), pretends she is the mother of a younger boy and her familiar (a girl child in their cat-human form), and later she becomes the lover of that (adult) boy, who then he dies. Again, and again.
Philippa and Collin’s relationship is odd. We see them in the mountain village Collin grows up in. He knows a thing or two about being the scapegoat, as his village used him before a beautiful (manga shaped and blonde) woman came to live among them. You see, anyone different (one arm like Collin), too beautiful (the new woman) or has anything about them that makes others fear, hate, envy, or be jealous of them, are chosen as the scapegoat, and/or is labeled a witch. But what seems just like normal envy and jealously of one woman (Philippa with her hair of red flames) trying to turn the village against the new woman, is far from it. And Collin learns this after leaving his village when Philippa is exposed as the real witch. The two become “mother and son” only to have Collin grow and the two develop feelings for each other. Philippa’s familiar is there beside them and when love becomes overwhelming, death follows. Sometimes Collin’s, sometimes other people, sometimes both.
The artwork is what kept me reading. Because I was reading an online reader copy on Edelweiss and only able to read a little at a time at lunch, I was confused by the story. There are interconnecting stories that at first seem separate, but since witches do not play by the rules of humans, or the rules of time and space they do not have to have a logical flow to their story either, I guess. It feels translated, and the flow of the story is bumpy. Yet, I can see how people would prefer that jumping in text as you are never bogged down by drawn out story arcs. The art is manga style, and while simple, it has the right number of details. And it is packed as well. There are brightly done colors (red is obvious due to the prominent fantasy violence) and largeness to them. And not just the “large bosom” women large, but the largeness of a witch her passion, obsession, and love.
The sexuality, violence and overall maturity of the story makes me lean towards at least fourteen and up for reader level. There is a volume two planned summer of 2023 (volume one is due April 2023), and since I have about one more story to go, I am thinking I am going to have to follow the story of Phillip and Collin to the bitter end.
CBR15Passport Due to the multiple worlds/countries the reincarnations of the characters happen.
