The cute companion to Dear Dragon by Josh Funk has arrived! (Or will in September 2023). We will now enjoy pen palling with a young girl and her unicorn pen pal in Dear Unicorn. This is a fun story about a young girl and her pen pal, who do not realize that they might have a lot in common (they like art, sports, reading) but they are not exactly completely alike! At the end of the year picnic the beans are spilled, and a new adventure starts.
If you love unicorns and art this is the book for you. It is an all-ages book, but probably works best for ages five and up. The story is told in punny letters back and
forth to each character. There are rhymes, goofiness, and wonderful misunderstandings. The interaction is sweet and allows the reader to get a chuckle or two as they know why a unicorn breaking their horn is not the same as playing clarinet. Or be on the side of Nic as she is excited that her friend almost made the championship and it was wonderful, instead of the gloomier feelings of Connie.
The artwork is a delightful touch and perfect for the story. Charles Santoso created two styles to show the personality of each character. Connie is more serious (she thinks art should be in a museum) and Nic is more light-hearted to her approach (museums are horrible as you can never touch anything). These two different styles allow our new friends to start seeing things in a new light.
The twist at the end was nice, as it did not continue with the same revelation exactly as Dear Dragon. Therefore, both are great in their own ways.
