The older I get the more I realize, The Peanuts comic is not always (or really) for kids. They have some terribly adult humor (Snoopy dresses as Lucy to show how tough and mean he can me), the characters are mean, themes are mature in some areas, and frankly, Snoopy? Not the loveable pup I remember as a kid.
With that said, today’s kids can deal with more than I could and can. And they will be fine with Snoopy Soars to Space: Peanuts Graphic Novels. Charles M. Schulz has his hand in the classic comics (such as The Beagle Has Landed) that are seen after the new story about Snoopy going to the moon. Which some of those can be seen in the main story (or at least the influences). The setup is classic Peanuts with modern flares to the first story. Polished in ways only a cartoon comic/graphic novel can be, Snoopy Soars to Space is exactly what you would expect. It is a quick read for adults and the perfect read for the eight to twelve crowd.
There is a section at the start that tells you who is “starring” in the book. I missed Shermy (however, he is a character I am not overly familiar with to start with), but I was surprised they had him in the story and not Franklin (a more recognizable character). The idea of space travel/going to the moon is new in the book, so some kids might not understand that, but could work out to be an interesting talking point if you are reading/interacting with your child.
Overall, this is a solid three for me, just because it is Snoopy and the Gang and you really can’t go wrong with that. Due mid-January 2023, I read this via Edelweiss.
