John Steven Gurney (whom I missed when he came to my store due to a headache I was fighting) has a great baseball series called Fuzzy Baseball. I have read them out of order, which mostly is okay, but I do recommend reading in order. And in anticipation for the event, I ordered R.B.I. Robots (Fuzzy Baseball, #3).
This adorable baseball series that deals with having fun and a message to go with the flow of puns, fun and lots of goofy. Hammy Sosa (a Fuzzy) breaks the fourth wall a few times, and we even learn a little Italian. The baseball takes second base to the first theme of fear and overcoming it. When the Fernwood Valley Fuzzies come up to play the Geartown Clankees something seems odd. And when the team learns that the Clankees are robots, some rules need reading, interpreted and made so all is fair in love and baseball. Only one real issue remains. Blossom Honey Possum, the rookie of the Fuzzies,k is terrified of robots!
I have never heard of funky being used for fear/terrified. I had heard of “funky music” or “funky clothes” and of course, “funky smell.” But it fits poor Blossom. It also fits with its “funky art” and “funky theme.” It fits with the funky use of names (we see puns of Ty Cobb, Sammy Sosa, Jackie Robinson, and more).
The art is, as said, funky. It is colorful. The robots have funny angles, gears, and the disguises they used might even look like they fit smelling funky! (And even if they were not funky smelling then, they will be after 30 plus innings). The format is funky as it breaks the fourth wall with Hammy Sosa plugging his own graphic novel/comic to Papercutz (the publisher of the series). It is funky as there is an umpire sleeping on the field and an ostrich umpire leaning his head on a catcher’s head.
An easy to read-aloud graphic novel or ages (strong) seven to 10 can enjoy.
