This is Sarah Andersen at their best!
This time instead of following Sarah, we follow the Cryptid creatures and their everyday troubles, laughs, and ghostly loves in
Cryptid Club. We follow the trials and tribulation of Nessie, Mothman, Slenderman, Sam the Big Foot and friends who are waiting to give you a laugh or ten.
You might need to know a few of the cryptids involved or some jokes will fall flat (Slenderman is great with children) and what a Siren is (and why they “just want a boyfriend”). And some of the cryptids are new (there is a Siren that is an actual two trumpet headed siren head. Thing. Creature. Cryptid). However, there is a glossary at the end to help fill in those blanks.
The artwork, like the humor is pure Andersen. It is off beat, a little “naughty” but never inappropriate. Well, not really inappropriate. It does depend on your sense of humor. She is not tasteless or bawdy, but the humor is adult leaning. But then again, when baby Benjamin yells, “Release the Kraken!” and Momma Kraken says, “You’re still in time out,” as we see little Ben in a playpen; anyone can appreciate that.
The illustrations are fun and sweet and funny. They are minimalistic, but expressive, too. The two ghosts are a haunt, I mean hoot, with one in their flowered sheet (and not to mention the irony of “til death do us part” as their wedding).
A perfect gift for someone who has everything, likes humor, or the things that go bump (and ouch) in the night.
