The Hike: (Nature Book for Kids, Outdoors-Themed Picture Book for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners) probably is all you need to know about the book. Yet, to expand it is a fictional story of three friends (though there is an image that makes it seem as if they are siblings), who go on a hike to explore. And they find a little of this and a little of that and of little of something else. The hike results in the three of them finding the big and little of nature. They get lost, have interesting map readings, and finally find their destination.
Alison Farrell’s illustrations not only show the journey but the notebook/nature book that one of the girls creates. Each girl has her own talents, and they are reflected in what and how they see the wonders around them. And this is reflected in the fun, sweet and soft images. There is color and much in the way of details, but it is also
not overwhelming, just something that you need to take your time with. There is some subtle humor, and few “adult will get that” moments, but it is completely kid friendly.
A one-on-one reading might work best but could work as a group reading. While it is a lovely story for the individual child who enjoys adventures and nature, it might be best in the classroom. And even though it says preschool and kindergarten, I could see a young first grader able to enjoy. I would add this to my New Baby books to give, just because it is a fun story that everyone should read at least once.
