If you have followed What’s Up Beanie on Instagram or WebToons you know what a loveable stinker Alina Tysoe’s characters can be. In Emi Isn’t Scared of Monsters we have her signature style come alive when a young girl gets ready for bed. Flashlight? Check! Her dog Cookie? Check! Helmet? Check! Wait a minute, a helmet? Yes! Emi needs a helmet as she is getting ready to not sleep but keep an eye out for monsters! Baiting her trap, she and Cookie prepare for Monster trapping. Only thing is, maybe there are no monsters? (Or maybe they are?) Emi must stay awake if she wants to capture one!
The adorably goofy images of Tysoe come alive on the page as Emi and Cookie hunt the monsters. With a clever somewhat twist to the ending, our little, brave monster hunter has herself an adventure for sure. The colors are bright, popping and the details just enough to move the action along. The big eyes of the characters are adorable and a little creepy. And perfect for the story. They are full of expressions and just delightful.
This picture book is great for most ages, it is friendly for the younger listener/reader. Yes, we are talking about monsters under the bed, closet, on the bookshelf, or staircase railing, but it is lighthearted. Even when it is dark and shadows are around us, everything is light enough to not be spooky. Great colors are presented and overall, it is a fun, silly, happy, typical child, book. Great for adults as well.
