I have no patience anymore for books I am not enjoying. I have tried to finish this book the past two weeks and finally said forget it this afternoon. I just can’t get into this no matter how hard I try. My mind wanders. I don’t know if it’s the subject (following four young women in Korea who are very focused on their physical appearance) and the fact that seems to be the only plot. I just don’t know what I am supposed to be taking out of this book and just decided that trying to force myself to read to completion was not going to happen.
“If I Had Your Face” follows four women who are trying to navigate a world where impossible beauty standards seem to be king. The four women are Kyuri, Miho, Ara, and Wonna. Kyyuri and Miho are roommates. Kyyuri works at a salon where she is expected to entertain businessman. Miho is an artist who was able to go to New York to study, but returned to Korea. Ara is a hair stylist and Wonna is a newlywed.
I can usually point at one character that I can say well I liked them the best, but I unfortunately don’t have one this time. Everyone just felt flat to me.
The writing feels off in some way, I don’t know. I am wondering now if the flow is what is messing with me. Nothing seems to be going on for so many pages I just stopped focusing on the lines on the page.
By the time I hit 19 percent I decided that was it for me.
