From Archie to Zack is a GLBTQ+ story and a sweet friendship story. You can say that Archie and Zack do have a crush on each other (as a description mentioned the joys of a first
crush) or they are just dear, close friends, who care deeply for each other. This flexibility normalizes feelings and boys having them. It is also about acceptance as the whole school knows that the boys have this relationship. And when Zelda, Zinnia, and Zuzella find letters that Archie has written, they know who the Z is that they were written for.
Vincent X. Kirsch cleverly created a picture book that all can enjoy. While their illustrations are a bit off putting and for certain not for everyone, they help keep what could be a serious theme on a lighter note. Plus, the goofiness of them just is fun to look at. Or not. Sometimes I was all over them with a “YES! This rocks!” and sometimes with a “What the Flying Monkeys is THAT?” The cover tells you mostly what you will find between the covers, but also make sure you look closely at the images. The art supports and adds to what is happening to our Archie, Zack, friends, and teachers.
This picture book is about how Archie wants to show his love for Zack and how Zack wishes to share his love with Archie. There is humor and seriousness. There is fun and silliness. Overall, this is a book that works year round, but of course Valentines Day is a great bet. Plus, it makes a great gift for your special friend.
