When I first started my graphic novel journey, I found First Second publishers. Then, in my madness to read all that had been written by authors from this publisher (which by the way I don’t recommend as there are too damn many!) I found The Adventure Zone by The McElroy’s (Clint, Griffin, Travis and Justin) and illustrated by Carey Pietsch.
In many ways this third book in the Adventure Zone series (which is called Petals to the Metal if you are curious) is not as good as the previous two titles. Yet, at the same time, it is better than the others. (Yeah, I get the contradiction there). I guess I liked it as there are more shenanigans and more of the boys getting out of it but this time it felt more “natural” in the reading of it. The fourth wall isn’t broken as often. They are doing less talking to the reader and there was a more of a story where there is action. There is “rough” language that is steady, but it is appropriately dropped (this is one of the things I liked actually and I do not like swearing for swearing sake, it just felt like what people would say on a quest/adventure of this nature). Of course, there is sexual innuendos and not so innuendo filling the pages (if there was any question one character was gay, it’s been answered). There is a Romeo and Juliet love story (or more accurately a Juliet and Juliet love story). Murder is kinda funny (yes funny…. you must read it to understand) and not only is it funny, it is for a really good cause (you know saving the world and all). In short, just another adventure from the Family McElroy and Pietsch.
If you like humor or Dungeons and Dragons (with a little twist) you probably will enjoy this series. Start with the first one, of course, but if you were wondering if you should continue after the first or second, no need to worry, keep going. I’m researching when book four is coming out. And also, what is a podcast? And how do I find them? I need to find out what started this whole thing in the first place.
