I admit it, I am not really a dog person. My speed is more the pet rock kind of pet. However, if you love dogs, have a dog or ten, want a dog, can’t have a dog or want to read about dogs, this is the book for you. Also, if you like poetry that is rhyming, you should give this a once (or twice or thrice) over. Therefore, even if you are like me and not a “dog person” you can enjoy this gem from Avery Corman and Hyewon Yum.
Bark in the Park! Poems for Dog Lovers is a clever look into different types of dogs with fun, short rhyming poems showing the best that these canines have to offer. As you take a walk in the park, no matter your bred, it most likely will be there. Each dog’s poem tells about the humor, toughness, loves and personalities of our four-legged companions. You can see pugs, bull terriers, Great Danes and more. Also, Yum’s illustrations have fun hidden treats as well (I am still looking for the squirrels on a couple pages). There is something for everyone; or everything for someone.
And while they are poems, they flow as if this was a traditional story of a picture book. You are not reading poetry; you are reading text that is poetic. The art is clever and cute. While cartoonish, they are not “cartoony.” Everything is filled with light, soft colors that are not muted and warmth. Faces of human and pup smile, sleep and express their feelings.
